Exercise & Stress

Over my time as a Recovering Couch Potato, exercising has turned into my therapy for the stresses of life.  Human nature is to dwell on the things we can’t control, and life is full of them.  Work, death, financial, personal, and business stresses are everywhere.

Early in my running life, I had to cope with the death of a close personal friend, taken before turning 30 years old.  As a Pall Bearer at the funeral, it was one of the worst days of my life. 

About that time, I was considering my victory with running.  I had tried it, and I had succeeded.  I was running 5K every other day.  The success of attaining the 5K was something I was proud of!  HOWEVER, the stress of this huge loss was such a burden, I thought I’d go for a run.  That first run and the “me time” to reflect on the loss showed me the therapeutic aspect of running and of exercising.

In the days since, and over the years, I have come to learn that after a bad day, it’s time for therapy.  The beautiful thing about my exercise therapy is that I always feel better, and usually run the fastest, lift the most, and generally do my best.  On the good days it’s exercise, on the great days it’s therapy.
